Decontamination

1. What is decontamination?

Decontamination is a process for making refinery equipment safe for personnel entry.

To meet this goal after decontamination equipment must be:-

• Non-pyrophoric
  
• H2S free
  
• Benzene free
  
• Explosive gases (LEL’s) free
  

This is achieved by:-

• De-oiling via solvency and surfactancy
  
• Sulfide oxidation – in all areas of the equipment
  
• Degassing – LEL from water, oil and vapor
  
• Benzene control – putting the benzene where you want it
  
• Sludge reduction
  
• Wastewaster conditioning - if you can’t get rid of the wastes generated quickly decontamination has not taken place
